About Invisalign

Invisalign is the #1 doctor-recommended clear aligner brand in the world.

Invisalign aligners can treat all kinds of smiles.

Dr. Wirant has been transforming smiles and changing lives with Invisalign aligners for over 20 years. From small shifts to big moves, Invisalign treatment is a smile transformation you can see! Beyond straightening your teeth for a beautiful, confident smile—it has oral health benefits, too!

What health benefits can you expect from straight teeth?

Straight teeth make it easier to properly brush, floss, and remove debris from your gum line, so gum pockets, tooth decay, and gum disease are less likely to develop.

When straight teeth make it easier to properly brush and floss, it’s also less difficult to remove plaque from the surface of your teeth, reducing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

Properly aligned teeth can relieve extra pressure on your bite. And that means less jaw pain, headaches, and chipped or worn-down teeth – which can be expensive to repair.

How Invisalign® treatment works

Transforming your smile is as easy as 1, 2, 3.

STEP 1  Meet with Dr. Wirant

During your free consultation appointment, Dr. Wirant can discuss your treatment options. If you are a good candidate for Invisalign, he or one of his clinical team members will use a state-of-the-art iTero Element™ scanner to quickly and precisely create a detailed, 3D scan of your current smile. Dr. Wirant can then map out a custom treatment plan for your Invisalign journey. You can even see a sneak peek of what your new smile could look like.

STEP 2  Begin the transformation

When you pick up your first set of Invisalign aligners, Dr. Wirant will check them to make sure that they fit correctly and are as comfortable as possible. We will also schedule a series of regular, face-to-face check-ups to give you each new batch of aligners and monitor the progress of your new smile. As part of the process of shifting your teeth during your treatment, you’ll be swapping out your aligners often.

STEP 3  Look after your beautiful, new smile

Like all teeth straightening treatments, including braces, once you’re done with your Invisalign treatment, you’ll need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth straight.

Who can wear Invisalign aligners?

Invisalign aligners can treat kids, teens, and adults.

Invisalign for Children

Designed for comfort without metal wires or brackets, discover if Invisalign First aligner treatment is right for your child. At John M. Wirant, D.M.D. Orthodontics, we are happy to discuss the pros and cons of braces vs. Invisalign aligners, and together decide the best option for your child.

Invisalign for Teens

Invisalign for teens for a drama-free smile.

The most visible perk of Invisalign Teen is its aesthetic appeal. The clear aligners are virtually undetectable, allowing teenagers to undergo orthodontic treatment without feeling embarrassed or like their braces will affect their social lives. With Invisalign Teen, there’s no need to hide that smile!

Additional Benefits of Invisalign for Teens:

  • Fewer dietary restrictions.
  • Removable aligners make oral hygiene easier.
  • Aligners can be removed for photographs or during sports

Invisalign FAQs?

Invisalign treatment is the process of wearing a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually straighten your teeth. There are no brackets or wires involved or any of the restrictions associated with traditional braces.

Invisalign works like braces by applying gentle, continuous pressure to misaligned teeth, gradually moving them into place. Using a series of custom-made, clear plastic trays that change every 1-2 weeks, the teeth shift in a predictable, controlled, and comfortable way. Each aligner is designed to fit only your teeth for a personalized treatment plan.

Both give amazing results. At your consultation, Dr. Wirant and his team can discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each for your particular case.

Invisalign is an excellent solution to straighten teeth and improve appearance, but it is not the best option for everyone. Invisalign is a good option for people who want to improve the appearance of their smile or correct minor bite issues. Invisalign becomes a bit of a challenge when your bite is out of alignment. Fixing the bite first may allow you to get a more successful result with Invisalign. For more severe cases, braces or other treatments may be better. Dr. Wirant is a board-certified orthodontist with 25 years of experience. He can correct a large number of orthodontic issues with Invisalign. Please schedule a consultation at our office and find out what we can do for you.

General dentists can become Invisalign providers as long as they take a basic course from Invisalign. However, compared to an orthodontist’s specialized training—over seven years in total beyond a bachelor’s degree—dentists are significantly limited in what they can accomplish with Invisalign.

Professional orthodontists like Dr. John M. Wirant undergo years of extra study. General dentistry does not have the same kind of extensive education requirements. Only the top one or two graduating dental students are offered spots in orthodontic residencies each year. A residency adds three years of training after the standard four years of dental school.

Although Invisalign does offer dentists a basic overview of how to use their system, the training revolves around how to use Invisalign: NOT how to straighten teeth. In other words, a dentist can perform some basic Invisalign duties, like sending patient impressions and scans, creating limited patient plans or minor modifications, and check-ups.

But because they have not received the training necessary to align teeth, a dentist’s abilities do not go beyond the basics with Invisalign.

You should always remove the aligner trays before eating or drinking anything other than water. For drinking water, you can leave them in. (Leaving aligners in while drinking beverages that are sugary or acidic can leave residues trapped against your teeth, which could lead to tooth decay.)

After removing your aligners to eat or drink, rinse your mouth with water or brush your teeth before putting them back in.

You should not drink hot beverages tea while wearing Invisalign. Always remove your aligners before consuming hot beverages as they can warp the plastic material of the trays due to the heat. Drinks with strong colors like red wine, coffee, and certain teas can stain your aligners.

Rinse your aligners whenever you take them out to clean off saliva, food particles, and bacteria.

Gently brush your aligners daily with a soft toothbrush, using a clear, unscented hand soap. (Most toothpastes are too abrasive and may scratch the surface of your aligners.)

Brush and floss your teeth before putting your aligners back in.

This varies by patient. If you have minimal crowding, your next appointment could be up to 3 months after you start. You will wear the trays as prescribed by Dr. Wirant, and periodically come back to the office for us to monitor your progress. If we need to create space between your teeth to aid in alignment, there may be a few additional visits.

There are many competing aligner products on the market. We can discuss your options in-office.

Within the Invisalign product offering, there are different “tiers” depending on the expected length of aligner treatment. If choosing a lower tier of treatment than recommended, you will receive fewer aligner trays and may not get the desired finished result.

Invisalign markets differently to age groups such as children and teens. The actual Invisalign product is the same as for the adults- aligners, but involves different tiers (costs).

Dr. Wirant is a board-certified orthodontist with extensive training and over 25 years of experience. He can make a proper recommendation for which type of aligner or tier would work best for your needs.

There are many cases were Invisalign is an ideal product for children and teens. So yes, we do recommend it when we feel it will give a result comparable to braces. There are some cases where Invisalign offers a true advantage over braces. In other cases, it makes treatment more complex. During orthodontic treatment, whether with braces or aligners, patient compliance is key. Patient compliance is an important consideration with aligners, as they can be removed, making it easy to forget wearing them -or even lose them.

A full set of aligner trays are shipped to us at the start of your treatment. At the completion of wearing this set, if it does not give a satisfactory result, another set – a refinement set, can be ordered. A new iTero scan will be required.

(Note: Lower tier Invisalign packages are not made for moderate to severe orthodontic cases. They do not include many aligners in the initial set – or refinements thereafter.)

“Refinements” during Invisalign treatment are needed when your teeth don’t move as anticipated during the initial alignment process, requiring additional trays to fine-tune the positioning and achieve the desired result. This could be due to factors like not wearing aligners enough, teeth moving differently than expected, or experiencing an interruption in treatment, which may necessitate further adjustments to achieve a perfect smile. Most lower tier Invisalign packages include just one refinement. If you have moderate to severe crowding, your treatment may require additional refinements for the best results. Dr. Wirant and his team will be happy to answer any questions you have about your best options with Invisalign treatment.

The number of trays necessary depends on many factors. Orthodontic treatment with braces or aligners can vary greatly from patient to patient. That is why it’s best to visit a board-certified orthodontist, such as Dr. Wirant, for your aligner treatment. This will ensure success, and not waste your time, money, or jeopardize your dental health.

Any orthodontic treatment or dental appliance that comes in contact with your tongue has the potential to cause a slight lisp or speech impediment. That said, Invisalign’s thin, sleek design and snug fit may help to prevent speech issues from occurring.

If you do experience a slight lisp due to your aligners, rest assured that the issue will very likely clear up quickly, as you become more accustomed to wearing your aligners.

It’s also important to note that in most cases, any slight lisp you may notice is probably only obvious to you, and will likely be very temporary.

If you lose an aligner tray, you may be able to skip to the next one, but please call our office for advice first.

The key to getting the best results in the shortest time is wearing your aligners for the recommended 20-22 hours per day and sticking to the change schedule recommended by Dr. Wirant. While it may seem challenging at first, we’ve found that patients who follow this rule achieve better results faster and need fewer refinements. So, compliance is crucial.

Invisalign is usually comfortable, but you may feel mild discomfort for a day or two when switching to a new set of trays. This is normal as your teeth adjust.

To manage this, we recommend switching to your next set of aligner trays before bedtime so you can sleep through this transition and wake up feeling more comfortable.

For individuals playing brass or wind instruments, the position of the lips and the contact with the mouthpiece may feel different initially. With consistent practice and wearing of the aligners, most individuals adapt to these changes, and any impact on musical performance is typically temporary.

Yes, once individuals adapt to wearing Invisalign aligners, many report little to no impact on their singing abilities. Any initial adjustments in pronunciation are temporary.

Orthodontic treatment can generally help improve a singing voice by creating a wider palate and straighter teeth, which can lead to a fuller tone and better timbre when singing.

You should wear a mouthguard for contact sports, but you can’t wear Invisalign and a mouthguard at the same time. This would be very bulky, uncomfortable, and impractical. You need to wear one or the other.

There’s good news, though. Typically, you only need to wear your Invisalign aligners for about 20-22 hours per day. They can be removed to brush and floss and to eat and drink, and also when you play contact sports.

So, as long as you are still wearing your aligners for 20-22 hours per day, you can pop them out and put in your sports mouthguard before practice or a game, and ensure your smile remains healthy and strong.

Please ask Dr. Wirant or his team about what type of mouthguard would work best for you during your treatment!

We get this question all the time, and the answer is most often -YES! If you are a good candidate for Invisalign, we can usually get your treatment started within 2-3 weeks from your first appointment. (You will need a consultation appointment and orthodontic records to be taken before beginning treatment.) If your dental issues are slight to moderate, we may be able to straighten your teeth just in time for your wedding photos, and finish any final adjustments after the big day, if needed. We’ve helped many people get their smiles wedding-ready, and we’d love to help make yours special too! Let our team know you’re eager to get started so we can make time for you.
